What gas tank telemetry actually solves
Anyone who distributes or consumes LPG makes decisions based on a number they rarely have: the actual level of each tank. Without it, refills get scheduled by calendar or by estimated consumption, and three costs appear that show up on no invoice.
Run-outs
A tank that empties sooner than expected stops an entire operation: a plant, an industrial kitchen, a grain dryer. The cost is not the gas, it is the downtime.
Trips that were not needed
A truck driving 120 kilometres to find a half-full tank burns fuel, driver hours and a delivery window that another customer did need.
Manual inspections
Reading a dipstick or a gauge means someone has to travel to the tank. That is paid time, travel risk, and a figure that goes stale the same day it is taken.
How the IoT system for LPG tanks works
The architecture has three parts, and none of them requires civil works or running power to the tank:
- A level sensor on the tank. Selected according to tank type (above-ground, cylinder, cryogenic) and the measurement required. It reports over Bluetooth Low Energy.
- A Myriota AssetHawk satellite modem. It picks up the sensor reading and transmits it. Hybrid connectivity: it uses LTE-M or NB-IoT cellular where available, and switches automatically to the HyperPulse satellite network where there is none. Up to ten years of operation on two AA batteries, IP68 enclosure.
- A monitoring platform. Tank level, consumption history and threshold alerts, so deliveries get scheduled on data rather than on a calendar.
Why satellite, not cellular alone
The case for satellite is not technical, it is about coverage. The LPG tanks that benefit most from remote monitoring are exactly the remote ones: farms, mines, isolated plants, pumping stations. Those are the places where cellular signal is patchy or absent, and where sending someone to look costs more than anywhere else.
A cellular-only device stops reporting precisely at the tanks where the data is worth most. A hybrid one uses cellular when it is there — cheaper, higher bandwidth — and falls back to satellite when it is not, with no one having to intervene.

Does it work if the tank has no cellular coverage? Yes, that is precisely the use case. The modem switches to the satellite network automatically when it finds no cellular signal.
Do we need civil works or power at the tank? No. The device is battery powered and mounts on the surface.
How often does it report the level? It is configurable. The interval is set according to the tank’s consumption and the battery life you want: more frequent reporting means shorter battery life.
Does it work with any type of tank? The satellite modem is the same one; what changes is the level sensor, chosen according to tank type and the measurement required. That is why the specification is defined case by case with an advisor.
